TUESDAY JUNE 10
“God
is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”
Php 2:13 NLT
BELIEVE
IN YOURSELF—GOD DOES!
Owning your dream means having your belief in
yourself outweigh your fears. A scene in the movie Akeela and the Bee illustrates the power in believing in yourself,
while recognizing the grace that God has given you to do it. The story is about
Akeelah, a girl from south Los Angeles who overcomes many obstacles to compete
at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. When her spelling coach, Dr. Larabee,
asks her, “Have you got any goals? What would you like to be when you grow up?
A doctor, a lawyer, a stand-up comic?” She responds, “I don’t know. The only
thing I’m good at is spelling.” Motioning toward a plaque, he tells her, “Go
over there and read the quotation that’s on the wall. Read it out loud, please.”
She reads, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is
that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be
brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be?
We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. And as we let
our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.”
Larabee asks, “What does that mean?” She answers, “That I’m not supposed to be
afraid.” He asks, “Afraid of what?” She answers, “Afraid of…me?” You will never
embrace your God-given destiny until you first believe in yourself. And that
belief comes from knowing: “God is working in [me], giving [me] the desire and
the power to do what pleases him.”
